Scaled industrial capacity
Refinery
The GMR manganese refinery will be located in Walvis Bay’s Industrial Zone to manufacture sustainable, low-cost, battery-grade manganese chemicals. This flagship project has several distinguishing features:
- Strategically located next to a major international deep-water port
- Access to the World’s largest manganese resource and cheapest manganese units, the Kalahari Manganese Field
- Ability to select the most suitable ore to make high-purity, low-cost manganese
- Abundant renewable power
- Phased development plan to reduce capital costs and facilitate incremental market penetration
- Captive sulphuric acid plant to provide critical reagent at low cost
- Option to manufacture a variety of battery-grade manganese products to service changing battery chemistries.
Targeting commissioning of Production Line 1 (25 kt/a ore throughput) by 2028 with potential for three additional lines, each servicing particular market requirements.

Sulphuric Acid Plant
Sulphuric acid is regarded as the World’s most important chemical and critical to the production of fertilisers and the processing of metal ores, including uranium and copper.
Our sulphuric acid plant in Walvis Bay will feed GMR’s refinery and the growing domestic acid consuming market.
- Sophisticated but established technology
- Large sulphur storage capacity
- Production of not only acid, but also heat and electricity for local consumption
- Excess acid to feed growing domestic demand
- Phased development plan
Targeting commissioning of the first production of 85 – 175 kt/a acid in 2027 with potential to expand capacity up to 700 kt/a depending on demand.
