GMR Announces Completion of the EIA & EMP for the Manganese Refinery and Sulphuric Acid Plant
London, United Kingdom, 16 June 2026 – Green Metals Refining Ltd (GMR or the Company), a midstream refining company dedicated to the production of low-cost manganese chemicals for the Green Energy Transition, is pleased to announce the successful completion and submission of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for its planned manganese refinery and sulphuric acid plant at Farm 58 in Walvis Bay, Namibia.
The EIA & EMP were prepared in accordance with Namibian environmental regulations and represent a significant project milestone. The final report was submitted to the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) as part of the Company’s application for an Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC).
The environmental studies assessed the potential environmental and social impacts associated with the construction and operation of the planned manganese refinery and sulphuric acid plant. Specialist investigations included air quality, water resources, biodiversity, socio-economic impacts, traffic, noise, waste management and heritage considerations, supported by extensive stakeholder engagement with interested and affected parties. An Open Day was held in Walvis Bay on 11 May 2026 and was attended and well-received by community members, local businesses, authorities and other stakeholders.
In accordance with government guidelines, the review process is expected to take approximately three months followed by the potential granting of an ECC by MEFT.
The Company believes the projects have the potential to enable an important industrial development for Namibia and the wider region through the local production of battery-grade manganese chemicals and sulphuric acid, while supporting regional mining and industrial sectors. The domestic benefits include economic growth, skills development and long-term employment opportunities.
Derk Hartman, Founder & CEO of Green Metals Refining Ltd, commented:
“The successful completion and submission of the EIA & EMP marks another important milestone for our manganese refinery and sulphuric acid projects and reflects the extensive technical and environmental work undertaken by our team and specialist consultants. We remain committed to developing the projects responsibly and in close cooperation with government, local communities and other stakeholders, and look forward to progressing through the regulatory review process.”
